On 4th June, 1918, the 1st East Surrey battalion of 95 Brigade, 5th Division, moved into the front line in the Le Sart sector, west of the town of Merville which was as far the Germans had advanced during their second Spring Offensive that had begun on 9th April. On 9th June the enemy artillery was particularly active, probably in response to a gas attack on their trenches on the previous day, and 1st East Surrey sustained eight casualties. One of these was John Perry who was killed. |
